Defensive battle with sophomore Blake Choice playing good on ball defense on Davis who stuggled shooting tonight. Plus top performances in the state tonight. Here we go:
DePaul College Prep had a great defensive plan on Mr Basketball Jaxson Davis of Warren Township. They had Choice (#10) uses his length and quickness to make Davis work while he was dribbling. When he got into the lane, their Pack Line defense smothered him with help from senior Brown commit Rykan Woo (#4) and Toledo commit Rashaun Porter (#24) cutting off the gaps, and cutting off some of his vision for passes. Davis did get some out of there to shooters, but they couldn't make most of them. Warren shot 5/21 for 24% from three point range. Warren had a good start early but led only 12-10 after the first quarter. DePaul Prep got an early lift off the bench from senior forward Zion Lee (#40) who had10 of his 12 in the first half, and two early threes kept DePaul Prep close. Second quarter belonged to Depaul Prep and that's where they took over this game. Senior Michigan Tech commit AJ Chambers (#3) had 5 of his 9 assists in the first half on penetrations and post feeds to Porter. DePaul Prep led 31-22 at recess, and 45-37 after three. There was some drama late as DePaul Prep had 3 uncharacteristic turnovers in the last minute and senior Braylon Walker of Warren Township hit a three to cut it to three at 53-50. They fouled Porter with 4.1 seconds left who hit 1/2 free throws to seal it.
DePaul College Prep (Chicago) ups it's record to 26-3 to end regular season and will be #1 seed in Class 4A Loyola Academy (Wilmette) Sectional. Will be trying for a fourth straight state title in a third (Back to back Class 2A, Class 3A last season) different classification.
Warren Township (Gurnee) drops to 28-3 to end regular season and will be #1 seed in Class 4A Hononegah (Rockton) Subsectional. Looking to get back to state title game and win it this time.
NOTE: These two teams could meet again in Class 4A State Semifinal in Champaign. Chambers and Porter will be trying for their fourth straight state title.
