Writer: Big TimBig Tim

DePaul College Prep (Chicago) has made fourth straight trip to State Finals. Brother Rice (Chicago) and St Patrick (Chicago) makes this a Catholic school party in 3A. Glenwood (Chatham) is the only public school in the bracket.

Notes:

Head Coach Mike Bailey of St Patrick (Chicago) is making his first trip after 31 years coaching at the school.

Head Coach Tom Kleinschmidt of DePaul College Prep (Chicago) has been very good at his alma mater (used to be Gordon Tech) his fifth trip to state finals, fourth straight. Third in 2019 as well as 2022.

Brother Rice (Chicago)'s first trip to state finals since 2005 when McDonald's All-American Bobby Frasor was leasding the star player. He ended up playing at North Carolina.

Game 1: Brother Rice (Chicago) (30-6) vs St Patrick (Chicago) (28-7) 6;30 pm Thursday:

Brother Rice (Chicago) starters:

Senior Marcos Gonzales (6'4" point guard) (Citadel commit)

Senior Jack Weigus (6'3"combo guard)

Senior KJ Morris (6'4" wing)

Senior Max Justic (6'1" combo guard)

Senior Caden Workman (6'4" forward)

St Patrick (Chicago) starters:

Senior EJ Breland (6'1" combo guard) (Pittsburg State commit)

Senior Anthony Favia (6'1" combo guard)

Senior Coopr Kavanaugh (6'2" point guard)

Junior RJ McPartlin (6'7" forward)

Senior Nevaeh Hawkins (6'7" forward)

Keys to the game:

Brother Rice (Chicago):

Gonzales will have to keep getting a piece of the paint and causing defenses havoc with his scoring in the paint, at the rim, an occasionally a three. He gets it to Weigus a big time three point shooter. Morris will have to defend well and the Recliner boys will have to hit some threes against the 1-3-1 zone. Workman will have to work (no pun intended) to get position in the paint against McPartlin and Hawkins.

St Patrick (Chicago):

Will have to stop Brother Rice from finding holes in the 1-3-1 zone defense they play on the college floor. McPartlin and Hawkins will have to rule the glass and rim protect in the paint and rebound in the zone. They did well on Monday in UIC Pavilion with the zone. Breland and Favia will have to hit some threes from outside.

Game 2: DePaul College Prep (Chicago) (31-4) vs Glenwood (Chatham) (24-9) Thursdsay 8:15pm:

DePaul College Prep (Chicago) starters:

Junior AJ Chambers (6'0" combo guard)

Senior Makai Kvamme (6'2" point guard) (Western Illinois commit)

Junior Rykan Woo (6'1" combo guard)

Senior Jonas Johnson (6'6" wing) (DePaul preferred walk-on commit)

Junior Rashaun Porter (6'7" forward)

Reserves:

Junior Robert Walls II (6'2" combo guard)

Senior Gus Donohue (6'4" wing)

Glenwood (Chatham) starters:

Senior Gavin Simmons (6'0" senior guard)

Senior Jonathan Helm (6'4" forward)

Senior Cameron Appenzeller (6'5" combo guard)

Junior Jack Kurmann (6'5" wing)

Senior Mason Neumann (6'7" center)

Keys to the game:

DePaul College Prep (Chicago):

They have experience and some of the players have been down here four straight years. WIll have to use their quickness and pressure the guards on defense to counteract Glenwood's size. Porter will have to be huge on the glass and stay out of foul trouble as they are not deep on the interior.

Glenwood (Chatham):

Has size, scoring balance and some good wing shooters with size. Will have to protect the ball against the pack line defense of DePaul Prep and punish them inside with their size.
