Both teams made it to state finals and Champaign in Class 4A last season. Warren Township is ranked 5th and was expected to contend this season. Evanston Township lost a lot of experienced talent, but have worked their way to #14 ranking. They lead the Central Suburban South Conference. Game was in reach for Wildkits till the third quarter. Lots of buzzer beaters over the last two days. Here we go:
Warren Township (Gurnee) 79 Evanston Township 60:
Great atmosphere and historic Beardsley Gym was packed for this Saturday afternoon game. Evanston is a good three point shooting team, but didn't particularly shoot it well in first half but stayed in the game. They withstood a nasty attack downhill by Davis (#1), who threw down a tomahawk dunk in traffic. Warren led the entire game as they was up 21-15 after first quarter, 41-31 at recess. Evanston cut it to 7 early in third quarter, but Warren went on a run as they crashed the offensive glass the entire game. Senior Avonn King had 3 offensive boards and 5 overall in first half before foul trouble derailed him as he had 3. Senior Braylon Walker (#11) had 3 offensive boards in first half. Junior Vito Rocca of Evanston Township came back from injury in this game. He was on minutes restriction but still was productive. Scored all 8 of his points in the first half. Warren led 62-42 at end of the third quarter as they were outscored 24-11 with Davis and Walker getting multiple steals and run outs. Evanston Head Coach took his starters out with about 5 minutes to go in the game and any chance of a comeback went away. Substitutes came in and finished the game. Junior Dion Lane Jr attacked the rim for Evanston Township trying to create opportunities for a comeback but it was not to be.
Warren Township (Gurnee) goes to 24-2 and will likely be the #1 seed in Hononegah (Rockton) Sectional. Evanston Township drops to 22-5 and will likely be the #2 seed in Loyola Academy (Wilmette) Sectional. Seedings come out next week.
