WINNETKA, ILLINOIS: Jaxson Davis is SPECIAL!!!!! Had to begin this with that because he took the game over in the third quarter of this game. The freshman is just ridiculous. That's it that all...at least in this paragraph.
#19 Warren Township (Gurnee) 56 #12 New Trier (Winnetka) 42: The Blue Devils picked up a HUGE win on the road over an experienced battle tested team. A few of these players played a huge role on New Trier's State Finals team last year. I predicted them to win, but didn't think deep enough about how special Davis is. New Trier led 31-25 at the half and looked in control of the game. Ian Brown of New Trier had 15 at halftime. Ended the game with 15 not scoring in the second half. Did have 8 rebounds. Then the second half began and Davis just took over doing a little bit of everything, scoring, steals, no look passes on the break and in the half court. I'll say a little bit about Davis and the steady consistent burn of junior Javerion Banks of Warren a little bit later. Warren led 40-36 at the end of three, and just took over in the fourth quarter. New Trier was having a hard time getting shots and when they did was missing. It did not help that sophomore sensation Chris Kirkpatrick of New Trier went to the bench with three fouls. This helped turn the momentum of the game too. To encapsulate the game Kirkpatrick was trying to set up the offense in the middle of fourth quarter. Davis stripped him of the ball and scored the fast break layup. Ball game. Kirkpatrick ended up with 7 points. Junior Colby Smith was next best scorer for New Trier after Brown with 9 points. Warren Township moves to 4-1, while New Trier drops to 4-1.
Top performers for Warren Township (Gurnee):
Jaxson Davis: Where to start with the 6'1" freshman point guard? Filled the stat sheet with 17 points 6 assists 3 steals with 1 turnover. Was 2-7 from three but did everything else and just took over the game with some nice no look passes. New Trier tried to trap him with the 1-3-1 zone. One time he dribbled through the defense, lost the ball briefly, regained it, and threw a no look pass to Alex Daniels for the layup. He has the most responsibility on him for a high school freshman than I've seen in a long time. Thing is he's going to get BETTER!!!!!
Javerion Banks (6'1" junior wing): He was steady the entire game, leading the game in scoring 19 points on 4 threes, 7 redounds and hustling all over the floor. Had great help defense using his athleticism and quickness to disrupt New Trier's offense. Hit some shots at key times of the game, a lot off feeds from Davis. He's an X-factor for this team moving forward.
Jacquari Webb (5'11" senior guard): Came into the game for the first time in the second half replacing Immanuel Brown (not sure why he never came in for the second half). He made some big plays on both ends. Did not score but had some key assists at the end with 3 and 3 rebounds. Played some good defense on Ian Brown in the second half. He's another glue guy who makes the right play for his team. Winning plays.
Alex Daniels (6"6' senior wing): Moved to get himself in position to score some baskets at the rim in the second half. Ended up with 15 points 3 rebounds 3 steals doing rim protecting and using quick hands to get his steals.
