I went out to the West Suburbs to check out a rivalry that is not talked about in the Chicago Area. Yes Proviso West (Hillside) is a natural rival, but this one has been heated over the last few years. I've been to a couple of them now, and while no shoving matches happen on the court, it is a fun one to watch. It's a clean rivalry. It's a little bit crazy getting there as it's in a peculiar location, but it's a nice atmosphere. Here we go:
#20 Proviso East (Maywood) 77 Willowbrook 69: Proviso East had this one in control most of the game though their lead was cut to 5 at 72-67 with about 4 minutes left and Willowbrook possession. They could not convert and senior guard Emory Marshall (6'0") score a basket with the foul. Did not convert the three point play but it was 74-67 and ball game at that point. Proviso East led 24-10 at the end of first quarter and 45-35 at half and 69-58 after three quarters. Senior point guard Noah Campbell kept Willowbrook in the game with 17 first half points on 3 of 4 from three and two point range. He cooled off in the second half going 4 for 14 combined with 1 for 7 from three. The game never felt like Willowbrook was going to come back and win this game.
Proviso East scoring balance: They had four players in double figures led by senior forward Bryce Coleman (6'7") with 17 points and 5 rebounds followed by senior guard Emory Marshall (6'0") with 16 points and 4 assists. Senior guard Jaloni Johnson (6'5") had 15 points and 3 steals.Senior guard Byron Pullen (6'1") had 10 points 8 rebounds and 3 steals.
Willowbrook fought on both ends: Though you did not feel like they would win this game, they fought as best they could, getting on the floor for loose balls and hitting the glass on both ends. They are undersized but that does not stop them from making things tough for opponents on the interior. Senior forward Isaac Sobieszczyk (6'3") had a double/double 12 points and 12 rebounds before fouling out. Campbell ended up with 28 points 4 assists and 2 steals.
Proviso East free throw shooting: I talked to some of their fans and they say the awful free throw shooting tonight was an aberration. I tend to believe them because this team has lost only 2 games all season. Teams with their record are not usually bad free throw shooting teams. They shot 7 for 20 from the stripe but forced 15 turnovers.
Proviso East (Maywood) ups it's record to 14-2, 5-0 in West Suburban Gold. Willowbrook drops to 0-4, 4-12 in West Suburban Gold. Records don't matter in this rivalry as they are usually in single digits.
