NEW LENOX, IL: I was out to see senior Seth Cheney but saw a great performance by freshman Kelechi Enyia for Providence Catholic. Here we go:
Providence Catholic (New Lenox) 58 St Francis De Sales (Chicago) 56:
This school won a state title in 1979 with Walter Downing leading the way. Have not done much since in the sport but school has won a lot of football and wrestling titles. This year has been tough for the Celtics. A lot of it is playing in the Chicago Catholic League White Division. Same for St Francis De Sales which is is Class 1A school. Both made this a great game tonight. St Francis came back and took a brief lead in the fourth quasrter. Heroics from Rayford (sophomore) and Enyia down the stretch with a nice steal and basket from Cheney.
First quarter:
It was tight and neither team shot well in the quarter. Providence was 5 of 11 which is not bad, and St Francis De Sales was 5 for 12. Providence led 13-10 after one. Jacob Thompson of St Francis had 5 points as did Enyia.
Second quarter:
Providence scored at the same pace but St Francis could not buy a basket. They went 2 for 12 from the field for the quarter for 7 points. Enyia had 7 points in the quarter himself. Providence scored 14 points to take a 27-17 lead into halftime.
Third quarter:
St Francis De Sales started scoring at a high rate as Derrick Tharpe had 6 points in the quarteras did Maurice Jackson. They put up 20 in the quarter as Providence went cold going 2 for 14 from the field for their 10 points in the quarter. Game was tied at 37 going into the fourth quarter.
Fourth quarter:
Cheney came alive. He really did in the second half as he scored 14 of his 17 in the half and 8 in the foruth quarter. Enyia scored 9 in the quarter with a clutch basket with 33.6 seconds left and two free throws a few seconds later to put his team up 56-54. Thompson had a big fourth quarter for St Francis De Sales. He scored 9 points in the quarter. Jokubas Cepronas scored in the paint and got fouled to tie game at 56 with 11.8 seconds left. He missed the go ahead free throw and Cheney got the rebound, pushed it up the court, passed it to a teammate who passed it to Rayford for a basket with 6 seconds left. His only basket of the game. Timeout St Francis De Sales. Tharpe got the ball pushed it up the court, but Rayford knocked ball out of his hands, got the loose ball diving to the floor and time expired.
