Big week some movement in the rankings as usual. Chicago Public League had a brief shutdown in the middle of last week by teachers union issues. After some meeting by public league coaches they were cleared to resume late Thursday night. Some teams only got 1 practice in before having to play games over the weekend. Let's hope the players get to finish their seasons out. Here we go:
1) Glenbard West(Glen Ellyn)(4A)(16-0)- They keep rolling on as they held Downers Grove North to 20 points, then took apart Bene Academy(Lisle) in the first half at the Steve Pappas Shootout at DePaul College Prep(Chicago). Consistently having 4 or 5 players in double figures every game. Epitome of the word "TEAM". Wednesday hosts Larkin(Elgin), Friday at Oak Park River Forest, Monday MLK Day at Fenwick(Oak Park).
2) Simeon Career Academy(Chicago)(3A)(11-1)- Beat Bogan(Chicago) then had a game cancelled vs #6 Hillcrest(Country Club Hills). Will continue their national schedule this week as senior Jaylen Drane has played consistently well all season. Junior Rubin twins (6'8" Wes and Miles) have taken them to another level. Tuesday at #4 Kenwood Academy(Chicago), Thursday hosts Hyde Park(Chicago), Saturday vs Gil St Bernard(NJ) at Hoophall in Springfield, MA.
3) Glenbrook South(Glenview)(4A)(14-1)- Survived rival Glenbrook North(Northbrook) at their place. Second time in a week they have won the Battle of Glenbrook. Senior forward Elon commit Nick Martinelli(6'7") and senior point guard Cornell commit Cooper Noard(6'1") are having outstanding senior seasons. They are getting that third scorer from different players which makes them more dangerous. Friday at Evanston Township, Saturday hosts Christian(Yorkville), Monday MLK Day hosts Conant(Schaumburg).
4) Kenwood AcademyChicago)(4A)(12-3)- Lost to Christian Brothers Academy(St Louis,MO) at the Highland Shootout. Junior 6'2" point guard Darrin Ames scored 21 in his return from an ankle injury. Senior 6'4" guard Nevada commit Trey Pettigrew continues to have an outstanding season as has junior 6'7" wing Davius Loury. Big weekend locally. Tuesday hosts #2 Simeon Career Academy(Chicago), Thursday at Curie(Chicago).
5) Curie(Chicago)(4A)(15-1)- Idle because of the Chicago Teachers Union mess. Had to cancel a trip to Kentucky. Still not as talked about as the other Chicago Public League Red rivals. Tuesday hosts Bogan(Chicago), Thursday hosts #4 Kenwood Academy(Chicago), Saturday West(Joliet) at Romeoville Shootout, Monday MLK Day vs Proviso East(Maywood) at Marshall(Chicago).
6) Hillcrest(Country Club Hills)(3A)(13-2)- Blew out Oak Lawn and had game vs #2 Simeon Career Academy(Chicago) cancelled. Senior 6'2" guard Aa'Reyon Munir-Jones had a monster game vs Oak Lawn. Looking for another conference title. Tuesday at Evergreen Park, Saturday vs Soldan(MO) at Romeoville Shootout, Monday MLK Day vs Oak Park River Forest at Hyde Park MLK Shootout.
7) Whitney Young(Chicago)(4A)(8-4)- Won their only game of the week in Minnesota vs #1 team in Minnesota Totin-Grace. Junior 6'0" point guard Dalen Davis had 31 points in his return from injury/death in family. Senior forward Northern Illinois commit Xavier Amos had a double/double in the win. Continues national schedule this week. Monday at Lincoln Park(Chicago), Wednesday hosts Westinghouse(Chicago), Thursday vs New Madrid County Central at Bass Pro Tournament, Springfield,MO Friday at Orr Academy(Chicago), TBD at Bass Pro TournamentSpringfield, MO Saturday TBD, Monday MLK Day vs Christ The King(NY) at Hoophall Classic in Springfield, MA.
8) New Trier(Winnetka)(4A)(15-2)- Idle because of covid cancellations. Senior forward Dartmouth commit Jack Munro has had a monster senior season. Friday hosts Maine South(Park Ridge), Monday MLK Day vs Bolingbrook at Fenwick(Oak Park).
9) Mount Carmel(Chicago)(3A)(16-0)- Beat Montini Catholic(Lombard) pretty convincingly as Junior point guard 6'1"DeAndre Craig had a big scoring game to continue his outstanding season. Some say the schedule hasn't been that tough but it will start getting that way real soon. Tuesday at Marmion Academy(Aurora), Friday hosts St Ignatius College Prep(Chicago).
10) Leo Catholic(Chicago)(2A)(9-2)- JaKeem Cole had 29 points in win over DeLaSalle Institute(Chicago). Five guard lineup playing well as a unit. Friday hosts Marmion Academy(Aurora), Saturday at Richards(Oak Lawn).
11) Orr Academy(Chicago)(2A)(7-1)- Idle because of Chicago Teachers issues. Senior 6'4" guard Cameron Lawin has been a revelation this season with his three point shooting. Senior 5'10" point guard Leontae Lilly is the rare 3 year player at the school. Looking for a 4th straight Class 2A State Title. Tough schedule will continue. Tuesday at Christian(Yorkville), Wednesday hosts Schurz(Chicago), Friday hosts #6 Whitney Young(Chicago), Saturday vs Dunlap and Galesburg at Galesburg.
12) Wheaton Warrenville South(4A)(16-1)- Beat Batavia in another low scoring game. This team makes you play their way and at their pace. Wednesday hosts Glenbard North(Lombard), Saturday vs Central(Joliet), and Lake Forest Academy-Org at Wheaton Warrenville South MLK Shootout, Monday MLK Day TBD.
13) Hyde Park Academy(Chicago)(3A)(11-3)-Jumps in poll with win over Riverside Brookfield without senior 6'1" star guard Davontae Hall. Looks like they will give a lot of Red South/Central teams problems this season.Tuesday hosts Morgan Park(Chicago), Thursday at #2 Simeon Career Academy(Chicago), Monday vs Lincoln Park(Chicago) at Hyde Park(Chicago) MLK Shootout.
14) Rolling Meadows(4A)(16-2)- Laid waste to three opponents this week as junior guard 6'6" Cameron Christie averaged 25 points a game in the three wins. Junior Mark Nitkovich-Wilson 6'7" forward has been a beast on the boards. Friday at Prospect(Mount Prospect), Saturday at Evanston Township.
15) Brother Rice(Chicago)(4A)(13-2)- Beat St Ignatius College Prep(Chicago) on a three pointer in last 10 seconds by junior point guard Ahmad Henderson II. Rolling along in the Chicago Catholic League. Tuesday at DeLaSalle Institute(Chicago), Friday hosts Providence Catholic(New Lenox), Saturday vs Romeoville at Romeoville Shootout.
16) Lyons Township(4A)(12-3)- Beat Oak Park River Forest. Two of their three losses are to #1 Glenbard West(Glen Ellyn). Tuesday at York(Elmhurst).
17) Riverside Brookfield(4A)(10-2)- Lost to Hyde Park Academy but is rolling along in the Metro Suburban Blue. Tuesday at Academy(Wheaton), Friday hosts Timothy Christian(Elmhurst), Saturday vs nationally ranked LaLumiere(IN) at Marshall MLK Shootout.
18) DePaul College Prep(Chicago)(2A)(11-2)- Lost to DeLaSalle Institute(Chicago) but came back to beat Homewood Flossmoor at Steve Pappas Shootout. Tuesday at St Ignatius College Prep(Chicago), Friday hosts St Frances DeSales(Chicago), Saturday hosts Boylan(Rockford), Monday MLK Day vs James Madison(TX) at Hyde Park(Chicago) MLK Day Shootout.
19) Larkin(Elgin)(4A)(16-1)- Won Battle of Elgin in a blowout and their five guard lineup is using their quickness to frustrate opponents. Big game this week with #1 that could be a Supersectional preview. Tuesday hosts Streamwood, Wednesday at #1 Glenbard West(Glen Ellyn), Friday hosts Glenbard South.
20) Burlington Central(3A)(14-2)- New to the poll. Leads the Fox Valley conference. Thursday hosts North(Woodstock), Friday at McHenry, Saturday hosts North(Wheaton), Monday MLK Day TBD.
21) East(Oswego)(4A)(17-1)- Won 3 games handily last week. Senior forward Missouri St Louis commit Patrick Robinson and junior forward Mekhi Lowery are good pieces to build around. Tuesday at Central(Plainfield), Wednesday hosts #24 Bolingbrook, Friday hosts West(Joliet).
22) Michele Clark(Chicago)(2A)(10-3)- Idle because of Chicago Teachers issues. Wednesday at Lane Tech(Chicago), Friday hosts Marshall(Chicago).
23) Homewood Flossmoor(4A)(10-3)- Lost to DePaul College Prep(Chicago) at Steve Pappas Classic as senior Christian Meeks was slowed down in that game. Tuesday at Thornton Township, Friday hosts #24 Bolingbrook.
24) Bolingbrook(4A)(13-4)- Lost twice this week to Andrew(Tinley Park) and St Ignatius College Prep. Junior point guard Mekhi Cooper received a scholarship offer to Hampton University this past week. Wednesday at #21 East(Oswego), Friday at #23 Homewood Flossmoor, Monday MLK Day vs #8 New Trier(Winnetka).
25) Lake Forest(4A)(10-4)- Back in the poll. Junior forward Asa Thomas has had a productive season. Tuesday at Stevenson(Lincolnshire), Friday at Warren(Gurnee), Saturday Northside Prep(Chicago)
