Chicago Elite Classic was this weekend and a few ranked teams played in it. Some played out of state teams which may have some effect in these rankings. Team Rose Shootout at Mount Carmel (Chicago) is this coming weekend. New #1. Thought about adding a few teams but some stayed in because of their tough schedules and how competitive they played those games. Shorter write-ups this week than usual. Here we go:
1) North (Downers Grove) (4-0) (4A): Experience and Alex Miller playing well off Princeton commit Jack Stanton. Beat Metea Valley (Aurora) but was otherwise idle this week. Senior point guard Owen Thulin will have a chance to get into form from football. Tuesday vs Hinsdale Central. Sunday vs #19 Curie (Chicago) at Team Rose Shootout.
2) Brother Rice (Chicago) (6-0) (3A): Recliner boys keep rolling beating Loyola Academy (Wilmette) in a drag out game. They have a tough Chicago Catholic League slate. Tuesday at IC Catholic Prep (Elmhurst), Friday at Leo Catholic (Chicago), Saturday vs #17 Bloom Township (Chicago Heights) at Team Rose Shootout.
3) Homewood Flossmoor (6-1) (4A): Lost to Gonzaga (DC) at Chicago Elite Classic. Will have to find some better guard play in the half court. Have two talents back there so good chance to progress. Thursday hosts #14 Lincoln Way East (Frankfort), Sunday vs St Ignatius College Prep (Chicago) at Team Rose Shootout.
4) Thornton Township (5-1) (3A): Was a thought about moving them to #1 after beating previous #1 Kenwood Academy (Chicago) at Chicago Elite Classic. A shocking home loss though to #17 Bloom Township (Chicago Heights) has them move up only one spot. Chase Abraham is supporting Morez Johnson Jr very well. Friday hosts Rich Township (Richton Park).
5) Kenwood Academy (Chicago) (3-1) (4A): Lost to #4 Thornton Township at Chicago Elite Classic after a closs call at home vs Lincoln Park. Team misses injured freshman Devin Cleveland who balances their lineup of wings and bigs. Tuesday hosts Lindblom (Chicago), Thursday at Gwendolyn Brooks (Chicago), Friday at Milton (GA).
6) Benet Academy (Lisle) (6-0) (4A): Young team keeps rolling along but will they get tested soon? Thursday hosts Carmel Catholic (Mundelein).
7) DePaul College Prep (Chicago) (6-0) (3A): Big time comeback win at Chicago Elite Classic over Lane Tech College Prep (Chicago). Showed their championship mettle. Tuesday at Central Catholic (Aurora), Saturday at Taft (Chicago).
8) Mount Carmel (Chicago) (6-1) (3A): Lost a tough one to Vashon (MO) at Chicago Elite Classic after leading most of the game. Northwestern commit Angelo Ciaravino and Christian Uremovich played well. Tuesday at Providence Catholic (New Lenox), Friday at #15 DeLaSalle Institute (Chicago), Saturday vs Hillcrest (Country Club Hills) at Team Rose Shootout.
9) Glenbrook North (Northbrook) (6-0) (4A): Beat rival #21 Glenbrook South (Glenview) at home. Josh Fridman has looked like his dominating self after ACL injury. Tuesday hosts Antioch, Friday at Evanston Township.
10) Warren Township (Gurnee) (6-1) (4A): Beat two ranked teams this week. Won at #18 New Trier (Winnetka) and #12 Bolingbrook at Chicago Elite Classic by double digits. Then went home the same day and destroyed Kennedy (Chicago). Freshman Jaxson Davis had made a seamless adjustment to high school basketball. Junior Javerious Banks is playing very well. Wednesday hosts Libertyville, Saturday hosts Stevenson (Lincolnshire).
11) Whitney Young (Chicago) (2-2) (4A): Came back from 24 point deficit and cut lead to 1 vs Cardinal Ritter College Prep (MO) at Chicago Elite Classic. Ended up losing by 2. Junior Antonio Munoz was great at rim protecting in this game. Wednesday hosts Walter Payton College Prep (Chicago), Friday vs Palotti (MD) at Gonzaga DC Classic, Saturday and Sunday TBD at Gonzaga DC Classic.
12) Bolingbrook (4-1) (4A): Lost to Warren Township (Gurnee) at Chicago Elite Classic. Freshman Davion Thompson was exquisite in that game tried to put team on his back. Friday at Sandburg (Orland Park), Saturday hosts Neuqua Valley (Naperville).
13) Marist (Chicago) (6-0) (4A): Won against St Laurence (Burbank) in overtime at Chicago Elite Classic. Young team is playing well so far. Tuesday hosts St Viator (Arlington Heights), Friday hosts #23 Marian Catholic (Chicago Heights).
14) Lincoln Way East (Frankfort) (5-0) (4A): Won a tough overtime game against East (Oswego). Sophomores BJ Powell and Karson Thomas have had great starts to season for young team. Thursday at #3 Homewood Flossmoor, Saturday vs Lindblom (Chicago) at Team Rose Shootout.
15) DeLaSalle Institute (Chicago) (5-0) (3A): Impressive start to the season. Richard Lindsey and Tavariyuan Williams have had impressive starts to their senior seasons. Tuesday at St Francis (Wheaton), Friday hosts #8 Mount Carmel (Chicago).
16) Waubonsie Valley (Aurora) (6-0) (4A): Has rolled through their schedule beating everyone by at least 16 points. Tre Blissett needs to be a name on radars of college coaches and high school basketball fans in area. Junior Moses Wilson is one of the bast passer in area. Tuesday vs Harlem (Machesney Park).
17) Bloom Township (Chicago Heights) (4-1) (4A): Beat #4 Thornton Township (Harvey) by double digits on the road. Junior Peyton Edwards was a beast along with senior Jayden Clark. Friday hosts Bishop Noel (Hammond, IN), Saturday #2 Brother Rice (Chicago) at Team Rose Shootout.
18) New Trier (Winnetka) (5-1) (4A): Lost at home by double digits to #10 Warren Township (Gurnee). Foul trouble with sophomore point guard Chris Kirkpatrick change rhythm of offense. Ian Brown showed he can explode at anytime from three. Came back to beat Maine South (Park Ridge). Thursday hosts Deerfield, Saturday at Hampshire.
19) Curie (Chicago) (4-1) (4A): Lost a close one to Sidwell Friends (DC) at Chicago Elite Classic. Senior Will Gonzalez is playing real well after transfer from Riverside Brookfield. Tuesday hosts Gwendolyn Brooks (Chicago), Thursday at Wendell Phillips (Chicago), Sunday vs #1 North (Downers Grove) at Team Rose Shootout.
20) Romeoville (5-1) (4A): Ran through Plainfield schools South and Central last week. Damion Porter Jr and EJ Mosely are having great starts to their junior seasons.Tuesday hosts West (Joliet), Thursday hosts Central (Joliet).
21) Glenbrook South (Glenview) (5-1) (4A): Lost on road to rival #9 Glenbrook North (Northbrook). Senior Nick Taylor committed to Winona State (MN) this week. Congrats young fella. Friday hosts Maine South (Park Ridge), Saturday at Oak Park River Forest.
22) Riverside Brookfield (5-1) (4A): Moved into poll with comeback win over St Ignatius College Prep (Chicago). Junior Danny Loftus hit game winning three. Senior 7 footer Stefan Cicic is doing some elite rim protecting. Senior guards Steven Brown, and Mekhi Austin are playing at a high level. Sophomore Cameron Mercer is a blooming star. Only loss is to #2 Brother Rice (Chicago). Tuesday hosts Latin (Chicago), Friday hosts Elmwood Park, Saturday vs Thornton Fractional North (Lansing) at Team Rose Shootout.
23) Marian Catholic (Chicago Heights) (4-1) (3A): New to poll. Has played a tough schedule. Top players are seniors James Bullock Jr, Jonah Weathers and junior Zack Sharkey. Friday at #13 Marist (Chicago), Saturday vs Evanston Township at Team Rose Shootout.
24) St Ignatius College Prep (Chicago) (4-2) (4A): Lost to Riverside Brookfield in a tight one. Junior Phoenix Gills was excellent in that game. One of only two 2 loss teams in poll. Tough schedule so far. Tuesday at St Frances De Sales (Chicago), Friday vs Loyola Academy (WIlmette) at Loyola University for Jesuit Cup.
25) St Patrick (Chicago) (4-2) (3A): Beat Metea Valley (Aurora) and tough schedule has kept them in the poll. Junior EJ Breland has been excellent so far this season. Idle this week.
