Christ The King College Prep (Chicago) defends home court against Chicagoland Christian Conference foe Christian (Aurora)!! News and notes along with top performances in Illinois!!!

Writer's picture: Big TimBig Tim

This was a peculiar game as it seemed like Christ The King controlled it but never had a double digit lead. A few top teams lost tonight in Chicago Area. Here we go:

Christ The King College Prep (Chicago) 54 Christian (Aurora) 50: Took a visit to the West Side of Chicago just off I 290 for this Chicagoland Christian Conference game. Christ The King had the size and athleticism, Aurora Christian had the shooters. This was a testy game as an elbow was thrown on one play in the paint, and a ball was thrown at a player resulting in a technical foul. Onto the recap of the game. Christ The King led 16-15 after the first quarter as Aurora Christian was kept in it by 4 three pointers from sophomore Jalen Carter. This ended up being his only points of the game. Christ The King started forcing turnovers with their press defense to have a halftime lead of 33-25. Aurora Christian's senior Cam Morel got hot in the third quarter ending up scoring 12 of his 20 points in the second half. Aurora Christian cut the lead to 40-37 at the end of the third quarter. More turnovers by Aurora Christian who ended up with 13 turnovers by my count kept Christ The King in the lead along with senior forward Calvin "CJ" Worsham starting to hit the glass. Had a couple of big and one three point plays in the fourth quarter to keep Aurora Christian at bay. Junior Darien Green hit a free throw with 15 second left for final margin. Christ The King (Chicago) ups it's record to 20-3, 6-0 in conference. Christian (Aurora) drops to 15-4, 3-1 in conference.

Top players for Christ The King:

Darien Green, 6'3" junior combo guard, Christ The King (Chicago) has improved his perimeter shooting from three and mid range. Stat line was 15 points (2 threes) and 7 rebounds.

Calvin "CJ" Worsham, 6'7" senior forward, Christ The King (Chicago) is an inside/out force. Hit some mid range jumpers and dominated in the paint in the fourth quarter. Passed for a couple of assists out of the post. He had a couple of key rebound and one baskets to keep his team ahead. Stat line 20 points 6 rebounds 4 assists 1 steal and 2 blocks.

Aaron McClure, 6'6" junior forward, Christ The King (Chicago) led the team with 9 rebounds to go along with 4 points 1 assist and 1 steal. Had a dunk off of a pocket pass from Worsham. Good tandem with him.

Top players for Christian (Aurora):

Cam Morel, 6'4" senior wing, Christian (Aurora) started hitting buckets in the second half as he had 12 of his 20 in that period. Hit 4 threes in the game and added 6 rebounds 2 assists and 1 steal to his tally.

Marshawn Cocroft, 5'10" sophomore point guard, Christian (Aurora) had an effect on the defensive backboard. He had 6 of his 7 rebounds on that end to counteract the size of Christ The King. Stat line was 13 points (2 threes) and 3 assists.

Notes:

Problems at Hinsdale South (Darien) continue. There was a meeting to try and put their Head Coach Michael Belcaster on administrative leave which was one step to losing his job. His team captains and other players on the team spoke on his behalf. Some parents did too so the school board voted for him to be reinstated and keep his job. Here's the backstory on this: https://chicago.suntimes.com/2024/1/23/24048659/hinsdale-south-basketball-michael-belcaster.

The road is unkind just as it has been in college basketball. Same in Illinois High School basketball.

Big Tim's Top 2 teams in the Chicago Area rankings lost on the road last night. #1 Homewood Flossmoor lost at Bradley Bourbonnais, and Curie (Chicago) lost at Lindblom Math and Science Academy (Chicago). Both teams first losses to Illinois opponents.

#13 Warren Township (Gurnee) lost in overtime on the road at Stevenson (Lincolnshire) despite freshman sensation Jaxson Davis 31 points. Senior Jack Dabbs had 31 points on 6 threes for Stevenson.

#14 Loyola Academy (Wilmette) survived an ambush from Evanston Township.

Highland comes into Collinsville and leaves with an overtime victory.

Metamora gets revenge in a big way over conference foe Morton (IL).

Paxton Giertz of Seneca is in the 1000 point club and moved up to #5 on all time list. Congrats.
