David Douglas Jr a triple double as defending Class 1A State Champ Yorkville Christian advances!!!

Writer: Big TimBig Tim

First round of state playoffs started today and I FINALLY got down to The Canyon at Yorkville Christian. It's a place unlike anywhere I've been before as it looks like a huge farm. Nice building and good atmosphere. I was glad I made the trip though it is out in what us Kentucky people call "the boonies". I also saw a rare bird....a triple double by state's leading scorer. Here we go:

Yorkville Christian 75 Fenger (Chicago) 48: Defending Class 1A State Champs had to play on the first day of the state playoffs. They took care of business and survived and advanced though it ended up a blowout. Yorkville Christian went out to a 9-2 lead on 3 three pointers from sophomore Brady Sovern. More on him in a minute. Yorkville Christian led 21-18 after one quarter, 39-30 at halftime, and broke it open in third quarter after which they led 58-42 and cruised from there. Fenger never led in this game.

BRADY SOVERN WAS ON FIRE: 6'2" sophomore sharp shooting guard was 3 for 3 from three in the first 4 minutes of the game. He ended up with 19 points on 6 for 10 from three. His hot start put Yorkville Christian on top right away and they kept the lead the entire game. All of his threes were from the corners and 5 of them were catch and shoot threes.

ZACH MARINI HIT THREES OFF THE BENCH: 5'10" sophomore came off the bench and hit 3 for 4 from three and had 11 points for the game. He also was hitting them from the corners.

DAVID DOUGLAS JR FIRST TRIPLE DOUBLE IN SCHOOL HISTORY: Actually the first one as an IHSA team. Duke player Jaden Schutt had two when they were a club team. The 6'5" senior point guard and state's leading scorer, did not shoot well today, but was feeding his shooters right in their shooting pockets. Teammates were hitting them at a high clip. He ended up with 30 points on 9 for 27 from the field 10 rebounds 10 assists and 4 steals. He's not just a scorer as he's a point guard by trade. He showed that today and got his teammates involved early. He was 10 for 10 from the free throw line. Douglas Jr puts so much pressure on the defense as he can get to the basket even when double teamed. He can also get his shot off with nice step back moves to get space for his jump shot. Versatile player showed it on one of his rare off shooting nights that his team still won.

Fenger (Chicago) was led by Jordan Rowls (6'5" senior forward) with 20 points and 8 rebounds followed by Matthew Wilson (5'10) sophomore guard) with 12 points and 5 rebounds. Fenger ends their season with a record of 8-18.

Yorkville Christian advances and improves their record to 10-21 and plays Granville (Putnam County) at Dwight on Wednesday at 7:30pm.
