This is Class 1A, 2A day where a record was set for futility but we had four winners today that advanced to the title game on Saturday. There are 3rd place games but they won't be in this write up. Here we go:
Teutopolis with the unusual nickname of Wooden Shoes scored 17 points against DePaul College Prep (Chicago)....FOR THE ENTIRE GAME!!! DePaul Prep senior guard Maurice Thomas almost equaled them by himself. He had 16 points. Told that is a record low point total for a State Finals game. Hope they did better in third place game. This was a Class 2A semifinal.
Gibault Catholic (Waterloo) had an impressive performance in their 70-46 Class 1A Semifinal win over Cornerstone Christian Academy (Bloomington), though they did not shoot well from three at only 15.4 %. Shot 58.5% from the field though and ran their offense with efficiency, especially in the second half. Augustine brothers (Kaden, Kanen) combined for 27 points.
Scales Mound did not shoot well (recurring theme for the winners as well as the losers), but hit just enough shots in the second half to pull away for a 40-27 win over Tuscola in Class 1A semifinal. Earned a date with Gibault Catholic in title game on Saturday. Won despite shooting 28.3% (13 for 46) from the field for the game. Tuscola was worse at 20.0% (8 for 40).
Central Catholic (Bloomington) and Rockridge (Taylor Ridge) combined to shoot 9 for 37 from three (Central Catholic 5 for 15, Rockridge 4 for 22), but Central Catholic superstar junior guard Cole Certa came alive with 16 of his 19 points in second half to win 57-44 in Class 2A semifinal. He hit buzzer beaters at end of second and third quarters. Central Catholic was helped by 18 for 20 from the free throw line.
