Downers Grove North wins at Hinsdale Central for the second time this year by double digits. A change in defensive strategy in the second half helps Downers Grove North win their first sectional since 1999. Here we go:
Downers Grove North 53 Hinsdale Central 43: This one was chippy between the West Suburban Silver foes. Familiarity breeds contempt. Third meeting this season as Hinsdale Central won in double overtime on the road, and Downers Grove North won by 14 points. A Downers Grove North player (Quarterback for football team) received an intentional foul for tackling a Hinsdale Central player. Double technical foul on one player for each team after extracurricular activities on a jump ball after the whistle. All this action happened in the third quarter, where actually this game was decided. I'll get to that in a minute. North started the game on an 11-2 run in first 4 1/2 minutes of the first quarter. A minute later standout senior defensive player Jacob Bozeman (6'5" wing) hurt his ankle trying to go up for a dunk. If he converted it would have been 13-2, the North fans would have been going nuts, and Hinsdale may not have gotten back into the game. He was the primary defender on Hinsdale star wing Ben Oosterbaan. The game changed for the rest of the first half as Oosterbaan went to work. He scored 15 points in the first half. Downers Grove North lead 13-12 after one quarter. With Oosterbaan's explosion Hinsdale led 27-21 at the half. Bozeman came back in the third quarter briefly but could not move well so he went out for the rest of the game. North changed the strategy and started double teaming Oosterbaan. Game changed as North went on a 13-2 run to start the third quarter and lead 32-29. Timeout Hinsdale. Hinsdale scored only 4 points in the third quarter. Score at the end of the quarter North led 36-31. North controlled the tempo throughout the fourth quarter and Hinsdale started the foul game with 2 minutes and 20 seconds left in the game. North hit enough free throws as senior George Wolkow (6'7 forward) hit 5 of 6 free throws down the stretch. Held Oosterbaan to 1 for 8 shooting in the second half. He ended up with 21 points 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Billy Cernugel was the only other Hinsdale player in double figures with 11 points.
OWEN THULIN (#11 not pictured) CONTINUOUSLY ATTACKED THE BASKET: 5'10" junior point guard ended up with 13 points 7 rebounds and 2 assists. He was getting into the teeth of the defense and creating opportunities for himself and his teammates.
MAX HAACK (#14) WAS ALSO ATTACKING OFF THE BOUNCE: 6'0" senior guard was also attacking and scoring as well as dishing off inside and to shooters. He had 12 points 3 rebounds
JAKE REIMER (#1) WAS A BEAST ON THE GLASS: 6'8" junior forward is playing on a bad toe but still had 10 rebounds along with his 6 points and 1 block.
GEORGE WOLKOW (#24) WAS ALSO CRASHING THE BOARDS: 6'7" senior is an elite pro baseball prospect, but was hitting the glass on the hardwood. He had 9 points 10 rebounds and 1 block off the bench.
JACK STANTON (#21) WAS THE OTHER PLAYER IN DOUBLE FIGURES: Did not explode scoring tonight but did the little things for his team. He had 10 points 4 rebounds and 2 steals.
Epitome of team and a team effort. Downers Grove North has scoring threats all over the court and rotate Reimer and Wolkow in the paint area. Good ball handlers, passers, and shooters all over the court. Played 9 players tonight.
Downers Grove North advances with a 29-3 record to the Supersectional at Credit Union Arena in Chicago on Illinois Chicago Campus against Kenwood Academy (Chicago).
Hinsdale Central ends a fantastic season at 31-4.

#1 Benet Academy (Lisle) survived Geneva by 1 point on a last second outback by Johns Hopkins commit Brayden Fagbemi.
Marshall (Chicago) came back from a 20 point first half deficit to beat Hope Academy (Chicago).
New Trier (Winnetka) survived again by 1 point on 1-2 from the free throw line from University of Chicago soccer commit Evan Kanellos (him again second game in a row) to beat Glenbrook North (Northbrook).
Sacred Heart Griffin (Springfield) beats MacArthur (Decatur) for a third time this season, second time on the road.
Metamora won their 29th straight game.
East (Oswego) wins their first Sectional title ever beating West (Joliet) for a second time this end, and ending the career of McDonald's All-American Jeremy Fears Jr in the process.
Marmion Academy (Aurora) continues their amazing run, winning their first Sectional title since 1976 beating Burlington Central (Hampshire) on the road.
Simeon Career Academy (Chicago) cruised again.
Auburn (Rockford) wins first Sectional title since the days of NBA player Fred Van Vleet.
Central (Grayslake) gets revenge on Lake Forest after losing by over 20 on MLK Day.
DePaul College Prep (Chicago) runs all over North Lawndale College Prep (Chicago) to advance to second straight Supersectional. After all the injures they are one win from a return to Champaign.
Perspectives Leadership (Chicago) wins first ever Sectional title.
Central Catholic (Bloomington) and their star junior Cole Certa win a Sectional title.
Scales Mound wins another Sectional. One game from a return trip to Champaign.
Speaking of returns to Champaign: Class 3A could have the same teams make it down as last year (Simeon Career Academy, St Ignatius, Metamora, and Sacred Heart Griffin).
