Another long day of basketball but entertaining. I saw some great individual and team performances today. Game results in order from Game 1 to Game 8. Here we go:
Homewood Flossmoor 51 Maine South(Park Ridge) 34: Homewood Flossmoor got off to a slow start for this 9:30 am game. Maine South led 24-23 at halftime but the Vikings took off in the 3rd quarter outscoring Maine South 14-7 in the 3rd to take a 6 point lead. Then they sat on it in a little bit of a stall to start the 4th quarter but eventually pulled away. They were led by senior forward RJ Ogom's 17 points and 6 rebounds followed by senior guard Josiah Palmer's 15 points on 3 of 8 from three point range. Senior guard Casey Clark led Maine South with 15 points, 14 of them in the first half. Homewood Flossmoor advances to the quarterfinals with an 8-1 record while Maine South goes to the consolation round at 4-5.
St Charles East 64 Lincoln Way Central(Frankfort) 43: St Charles East jumped out to a 21-7 lead in the first quarter with 81% from the field in the first frame. Lincoln Way Central came back in the second quarter as SCE went cold from the field, and their lead was cut to 28-24 at the half. The game stayed close till the end of the 3rd quarter as SCE still led 43-34 and steadily pulled away for a comfortable victory as their shooting stroke from the first quarter came back in the 2nd half. St Charles East was led by senior forward Chase Monkemeyer with 14 points followed by senior guard Zack Clodi with 12 points on 2 for 4 from three. Lincoln Way Central's junior laden team was led by Matt Maloney with 17 points, then forward Ryan Kraft with 11 points. St Charles East advance to the quarterfinals with a 6-3 record. Lincoln Way Central goes to the consolation round at 6-3.
East(Oswego) 56 Auburn(Rockford) 36: This game was kind of a downer when finding out Class of 2021 talented guard Josh Ausler of Auburn did not play, nor was at the game. I have no idea why or no information on it. East had a slow start falling behind 8-6 at the end of the first quarter. They took over the next two quarters as Auburn could not find the basket from anywhere on the court as they shot 36.4% from the field over those two quarters. Meanwhile East was led by senior forward Sam Schultz who's minutes were limited as he's coming back from injury. He had 15 points on 7 for 9 shooting. Junior guard William Wolfe had 9 points and 10 rebounds. Auburn was led by senior forward Javin Davis's 10 points, junior center Mar'Quall Smith had 9 points and 6 rebounds. East advances to the quarterfinals with a 8-3 record. Auburn goes to consolation round at 6-5.
Stevenson(Lincolnshire) 51 Glenbrook North(Glenview) 31: Top seed Stevenson got off to a slow start falling behind 16-10 in the 1st quarter on 4 threes from Glenbrook North senior forward Ben Davis who had 14 first quarter points. Things settled for them in the second quarter by outscoring GBN 12-0 in the second quarter to take a 22-16 halftime lead. They put the game away in the third quarter as they received big time contributions from senior guard John Ittounas and senior forward Matthew Kaznikov. Kaznikov led with 16 points while Ittounas had 11 points and 5 rebounds. Senior guard Matt Ambrose had 9 points and 7 rebounds. Davis led Glenbrook North with 16 points as he only scored 2 points after the first quarter. Stevenson advances to the quarterfinals with a 10-1 record while Glenbrook North goes to the consolation round at 4-8.
St Rita(Chicago) 61 Willowbrook 59: The game of the day as the first quarter Willowbrook was hitting shots from everywhere with 5 three pointers in the first quarter for a 18-8 lead. Senior guard Everette Sutbblefield III of Willowbrook was housing things at this point, he had a 19 point first half. Not to be outdone senior guard Alec Millender almost matched Stubblefield III with 17 first half points as Willowbrook took a 34-33 lead into the halftime break. The second half was back and forth pushing the ball at a tremendous pace. St Rita took a 46-43 lead into the fourth quarter. The game ended on a game winning runner in the lane by St Rita junior guard Christian Henry at the buzzer. A lot of folks in the gym were howling for a travel violation by Henry, but the only whistle that blew was the official counting the basket. Millender led St Rita with 20 points, followed by Henry with 16, and senior forward Kevin Murney with 14. Stubblefield III led Willowbrook with 21 points, senior guard Sam Bruns with 11, senior guard Sean Tumilty junior forward Haven Pryor had 9. St Rita advances to the quarterfinals with a 8-4 record while Willowbrook goes to the consolation round at 4-6.
Marian Cartholic(Chicago Heights) 57 Thornton Fractional South 54: Second seeded and defending tournament champ Marian Catholic had a first round scare. TF South was not going away and gave the Spartans back court all kinds of fits all game. It was very close at halftime with Marian Catholic taking a 23-22 lead at the break. Marian Catholic took over the third quarter and it looked like they would run away with it. They led 43-32 going into the fourth quarter. Marian Catholic held on as they had a five point lead most of the quarter. TF South did get off a desperation half court shot at the buzzer that fell short. Senior guard Joe Green led with 17 points, while senior guard Ahron Ulis had 14 points 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Senior forward Yemi Elutilo had 13 points. Junior forward Isaiah Lewis led TF South with 18 points and 8 rebounds, followed by senior guard Ahkil Lindsey with 14, and senior forward Elijah Watson with 11. Marian Catholic advances to the quarterfinals with a 9-2 record while TF South goes to the consolation round at 5-6.
Westinghouse(Chicago) 78 Hinsdale Central(Darien) 73: Westinghouse controlled this game from the start as their tough schedule really helped in this game. They throttled Hinsdale Central with their pressure and forced 15 turnovers for the game. Senior guard Devin Davis was consistently scoring the whole game as he ended up with 33 points on 7 for 9 from three. Hinsdale Central cut the Wesrtinghouse lead to 53-50 before a Hinsdale Central player fouled a Westinghouse player on a shooting foul. then complained to the official and received a technical foul. Four free throws later and on ensuing possession Westinghouse scored to make it 59-50 and a six point trip. Westinghouse had a 12 point lead with 1:30 to play, but Hinsdale Central hit 6 threes in that span to make things nervous for the Warriors. Westinghouse hit enough free throws to secure the win. Junior point guard Kier Jordan supported Davis with 14 points and junior guard Dwayne Walton had 12 points. Hinsdale Central was led by senior forward Ryan Isaacson with 30 points on 6 for 7 from three point range. He hit 3 of them in the last 1:30. He was supported by junior forward Mac Quast and senior guard Connor Nelson with 10 points each. Westinghouse advances to the quarterfinals with a 5-6 record, while Hinsdale Central goes to the consolation round at 3-5.
DePaul Prep(Chicago) 75 Richards(Oak Lawn) 61: This game was two things: DePaul Prep junior guard Tyler Johnson housed the first half, senior guard Lance Moseley housed the second half. Johnson had 16 of his 27 points in the first half, Moseley had 15 of his 23 points in the second half. Richards fought hard but DePaul Prep was up double digits from the second quarter on. DePaul Prep had three others players who had between 8 and 9 points. Senior forward Albert Jones led Richards with 24 points and 10 rebounds. He was supported by senior forward KaJuan Wines with 20 and junior forward Anthony Jones with 10 points. DePaul Prep moves onto the quarterfinals with a 10-1 record while Richards goes to the consolation round at 6-4.
