One of the coaches at Horizon Southwest told me before the season to watch out for their team. I always take these with a grain of salt because most have biases of course. Well he was right. They've won the Chicago Public League Blue title in their 9th year of existence. Marshall girls meanwhile are used to winning city titles. It's a smaller school now and they won the Green title. Here we go:
Marshall 74 Austin 26: Not much to tell here as this was a blowout from the start. Marshall has all freshman and sophomore's on their team. Great future of the school can stay open as the enrollment keeps dropping by the year. Marshall led 24-5 after one quarter, and 42-14 at half. Game was in running clock territory by middle of third quarter, but a lot of fouls kept the game going longer than usual. Freshman Chamarre Scott needed up with 4 points and 16 rebounds for the game. Sophomore Ja'Una Williams had 18 points 6 rebounds 4 assists and 2 steals. Marshall ups its record to 19-8 and gets ready for Class 1A State playoffs. Austin drops to 10-2 and gets ready for state playoffs.
Top performer for Marshall:
Janiyah Green, sophomore guard: Outscored Austin all by herself. Stat line: 30 points (3 threes) 2 rebounds 2 assists and 4 steals
Boys Blue Title game:
Horizon Southwest 45 Julian 33: This game was a story of bad shooting by both teams. Neither team hit 40 percent from the floor for the game. A story of bad shots and forced shots on the college floor. Horizon shot a little bit better and hit the boards a little bit better. Horizon led 7-6 after one quarter, and 16-15 at half after Horizon's senior Kaivon Payton hit a 3/4 court shot at halftime buzzer. Horizon kept the lead as both teams just couldn't get any consistency from the floor. Horizon led 30-25 at the end of three. Julian never made a sustained run to make the game close and Horizon ran the time out passing the ball around the perimeter and hitting foul shots in the last minute. First playoff title of any kind for Horizon. Horizon ups its record to 23-7, while Julian drops to 21-5.
