Evanston had to win this game twice. Had a 14 point lead going into fourth quarter and lost it but held on in overtime. Here we go:
Kaidan Chatham is a 6'3"senior point guard. Niles North has three seniors whom he came into high school with. Purdue Northwest commit Reid Olson, Dylan Lam, and Hunter Gawron. Yaris Irby joined them his sophomore year on a safety transfer from Evanston Township. The other four were on varsity their sophomore year. Chatham was back and forth from sophomore to varsity. He was also injured most of that year. Had a breakout junior year at Niles North, but was playing on the wing. Olson and Irby were the primary ball handlers. He want to play somewhere that he could show his point guard skills. Hence his senior year he transferred back to his hometown of Evanston. He's their point guard, their leader on the court, and has the ball in his hands most of the time. He has shown he can play off the ball during his time at Niles North. Last night , he didn't talk a lot of trash in his visit back to Viking territory. He didn't show he was overly enotional, he just went about his business. Last night messed around and got a triple double in win.
Evanston Towsnhip 68 Niles North (Skokie) 64:
Central Suburban Crossover game was Evanston is in the South, and Niles North is in the North.
First quarter:
Senior Ian Peters came out on fire for Evanston. Shot it like his older brother Blake Peters who's the all time leading scorer, three point shooter, and steals leader at the school. He's plying his trade at Princeton. He was 3 of 4 from three in first quarter for 9 points. With that Niles North still stayed in contact as junior Mustaf Rexhepl had 6 points, and Olson had 5. Evanston led 19-16.
Second quarter:
Evanston really put it on the Vikings in this quarter. Peters continued to run hot with 6 points on 2 of 3 from three in the quarter. Sophomore Vito Rocca had 6 pojnts and freshman Ben Ojala had 5 off the bench. Irby had 5 for Niles North. Chatham had 8 assists in the first half. and 4 in the quarter. Outscored Niles North 23-12 to take a 42-28 lead into the locker room.
Third quarter:
Olson started getting aggressive with his offense. He was 2 for 8 for the quarter with 6 points as both teams stayed even in the quarter. Evanston took a 54-42 lead into the fourth quarter.
Fourth quarter:
Here's where the fireworks started. Evanston took a 14 point lead early in the quarter, then almost self destructed. Niles North did turn up the defense but not to the point of what happened. Evanston started just throwing the ball away, dropping the ball and turning the ball over. I counted at least 7 for the quarter. Meantime Olson, Irby, and Gawron came alive offensively. Olson had 7, Irby 7 and Gawron 4 in the quarter. Niles North came all the way back and took a 58-56 lead with just over a minute left. Then Rocco to Rocco, as Vito passed up a layup and kicked it out to big brother Theo for a three. GOOOOOD!!!!!! Evanston goes up 59-58 with about 40 seconds left. Vito Rocca gets fouled on next possesion and splits free throws 1 of 2 to go up 60-58. Rexhepi scores on a driving layup to tie it with about 10 seconds left. Evanston has the ball and Theo Rocca takes a long two that misses. Chatham gets the rebound with a chance to have a storybook ending. Misses it as it was contested by two Niles North players. Gets another rebound and it is blocked at the buzzer. Overtime.
Overtime:
Vito Rocca goes 1 for 2 from the free throw line, Niles North's Gawron scores at the basket to give them a 62-61 lead, Jayden Rodriguez scores a big basket to give Evanston a 63-62 lead. Chatham splits two free throws for 64-62 lead. Rexhepi scores a basket to tie it at 64. Chatham is fouled and splits free throws for a 65-64 lead. Irby forces two three point shots that missed, Evanston gets the rebound. Chatham is fouled again and splits two free throws for 66-64 lead. Rexhepi drives and commits a charging foul. Niles North is forced to foul Peters who hits both for the final margin.
We might see thie matchup again at the New Trier (Winnetka) Sectional. I've had Evanston vs New Trier (Winnetka) as the predicted sectional final, but Niles North may mess up that matchup. They are good enough to win a Sectional and very imrpoved defensively. Evanston will have to take care of the ball better late in games if they want to get deep in the playoffs and a chance at Champaign. Will be interesting to see how the seedings go? This could be a Sectional semifinal or final.
