Lance Ware, 6'9" 215 pound power forward, Camden High School, Camden, NJ. Hometown: Burlington, NJ.
Lance Ware played travel basketball for The New York Renaissance on the Nike EYBL Circuit. I'll go into his strengths and weaknesses and how they affect Kentucky.
STRENGTHS: Versatility as he can bring the ball up the court and set up an offense. He can post up on the block, and score on turnaround jumpers over either shoulder in the post. He can pass the ball out of the post, has a nice jump hook over his right shoulder. He's a good finisher at the rim, a rim protector, a good rebounder on the offensive and defensive ends. Ware has good hands, can catch passes in the post, has strong hands to hold onto rebounds. He spreads wide in the post which gives him a good wide base for guards to feed him in the post. He can run the floor and switch ends of the court very well. He is able to hold his position on the block to shoot his turnaround jumper. Ware being left handed helps him block shots and rim protect. Good rim runner to finish lob dunks, moves well without the ball to make himself available. Good ball handler. Has a nice spin move in the lane. Good leader. High motor. Has some athleticism with long arms.
WEAKNESSES: Has to work on his right hand finish at the rim. Too left handed dominant when driving to the basket and because of this does not have a counter move spin over his left shoulder to finish. Terrible free throw shooter, under 50% from the stripe. Doesn't have shooting range outside of fifteen feet. Forces shots on drives to the lane because of his lack of shooting range. This causes careless turnovers in the lane. Needs to get stronger to hold his spot in the post on the next level. Takes too many dribbles to score in the post. Needs to play more physical in the post. Can over dribble on the perimeter which causes turnovers.
CONCLUSION: Lance Ware will have to work on extending his jump shot. I'm not sure he'll be able to bring it to game action as he'll be needed in the post. He'll have to do some extra shooting in individual workouts on his time. He'll need to work on his free throw shooting constantly because he'll draw fouls in the paint. He can play center but he'll be undersized on the college level. He'll have to learn to boxout bigger players and get stronger to bang in the post. He hustles hard and will be a fan favorite because he brings the intensity in the paint. Ware should have a lot of opportunities for rim runs and dunks for the Wildcats. He will have to be stronger on the block so he can score in the post. He already is fundamentally sound in getting a wide base on post ups. He's a good passer out of the post, hitting cutters to the basket for layups and dunks. Should be a fan favorite for Big Blue Nation. He'll have to rim protect, grab rebounds, and give good outlet passes to the guards. He will not need to bring the ball up the court like he did at Camden. Welcome to Big Blue Nation, Lance Ware.
