This is the third in a three part breakdown of incoming freshmen for Class of 2021 at Kentucky. Introducing Tyrone "TyTy" Washington Jr.
TyTy Washington 6'3" 195 pound point guard, Az Compass Prep, Chandler, AZ by way of Laveen, AZ.
Consensus Top 15 player in Class of 2021. I'll break down his strengths and weaknesses. Some of his game can be watched on YouTube.
STRENGTHS: Straight up bulldog on both ends of the court. Will cut your heart out. Killer mentality. One of the most competitive players in the class. Can play both guard positions as he's good at catch and shoot threes as well as off the dribble. Tyty has an explosive first step off the dribble. Good size for the guard position. Shoots a high percentage from behind the three point line as well as from the free throw stripe. Has a nice two dribble pull-up mid range jump shot with either hand. Can find teammates in their shooting pocket on passes. Throws pin point passes on alley-oops. Defends either guard position on or off the ball. Good instincts on the defensive end of the court. Plays the passing lanes very well. Finishes well at the basket attacking on the dribble with either hand. Knows how to get open off the ball and use his body to shield the defender. Nice Euro step when he gets to the basket for getting away from defenders in the interior. Plays well off pick and roll game making good decisions whether to shoot or pass to the rolling player. Clutch player who wants the last second shot, or will make the right play to get a basket.
WEAKNESSES: Needs to get stronger. Can sometimes be too aggressive trying to get into opposing guards. This causes him to commit careless fouls trying to disrupt the dribbler. Reaches too much trying to get steals on the ball. Has to pay more attention playing off the ball defense.
CONCLUSION: As you can see not many glaring weaknesses as he is as solid of a point guard as you can find. TyTy will have a learning curve as every high school player does. He will eventually take over the starting point guard position and be the leader of the team. Look for him to be another in a long line of great freshman point guards at Kentucky. He's good enough to thrive at both guard positions. Best two way guard coming into college basketball. Probably one of the biggest snubs ever from being a McDonald's All-American. Kentucky fans will love this young man. He has great leadership qualities, plays hard every minute on the court, and is great at setting up his teammates. He brings you along with him as a teammate. Tough to stop as he can score on all three levels, and has a two dribble floater with either hand. One and done first round draft pick in 2022 NBA Draft. Great chance at being a Lottery pick.
