Looking for a sleeping giant in the Chicago Area for high school basketball for next season? Look no further than Lincoln Park(Chicago) on the North Side. They have a lot of young talent in the freshman and sophomore classes. They could be adding some veteran experience via the high school transfer portal. Loaded with talent and will threaten West Side powerhouse Whitney Young(Chicago) for the Chicago Red North/West Title. Whitney Young has ruled that division for years with only challenge coming from Orr Academy(Chicago). Holdovers are Class of 2023 Myan Whitfield (6’0” point guard), Class of 2025 Vincent Kelly (5’9” point guard), Keyshawn Barfield (6’9” center) Class of 2025 Justin Bowen Jr (6’4” wing) and Class of 2024 Justus Berry (6’8” forward) . Head Coach Antwon Kareem Jennings and Assistant Coach Ronald Fatty Duling are slowly building a powerhouse on the North Side. High academic school too that attracts players who have a high grade point a average, which makes them more attractive for college coaches.
Whitfield is a high scoring guard who has the ability to make passes to set up teammates for shots from three and rim runs. Quick first step gets him into the paint for floaters, pull-ups and finishes at the basket.
Kelly is a young emerging thoroughbred with speed to kill. Is learn to control his speed and use different gears. This should make him dangerous on both ends as he’s a steal machine on defense. Finishes over size at the basket with either hand.
Barfield has gotten himself in great shape over the last year. He can now change ends of the floor with great effectiveness, is a rebounding machine and rim protector. Evolving post up player with moves over either shoulder.
Bowen Jr is a wing player who locks up from point guard to power forward on the high school level. Offensive game is evolving as he’s more a run jump athere and finisher at this point. Rebounds well for a wing and can do it out of his area.
Berry has a nice turnaround jumper from 15 feet and in. Posts up on the bloc, and off the block. Rebounds out of his area and changes ends very well. Good passer out of the post.
Lots of talent at the North Side school. Still young, but could this be the year they contend for a Chicago Public League Title? Or are they still a year away? We’ll get a glimpse this summer in a couple of events, one being the Ridgewood Summer Shootout.
