Top performances in state tonight will be featured as well. Here we go:

Maine West (Des Plaines) 66 Maine East (Park Ridge) 65 in Central Suburban North showdown:

Maine West is a girls basketball school. They've won one state title under legendary Hall of Fame Coach Derril Kipp (RIP) in 1988 and holds state record for consecutive wins with 65 in a row from 1987-1989. Girls won another in 2019 led by Gatorade Player of the year Angela Dugalic who's a senior at UCLA. Boys basketball made Final Four in 1998 with Illinois player Lucas Johnson and Xavier (OH) player Kevin Frey. Tonight was about the neighborhood rivalry. Maine West lost the first meeting 66-48 in Des Plaines. Early on it was looking like more of the same as Maine East was up 20-2 and rolling. Maine West took two timeouts to stop the bleeding. Maine West started slowly working their way back into the game. Maine East led 23-13 after one quarter, 35-27 at recess, and 54-48 after three. Maine East was still leading 65-56 with about 2 minutes left in the game.

Junior Davion Tate (#1) went to work hitting two step back threes, one from the top of the key, the other from the corner. Game was played with a shot clock and this was key, as Maine East's offense boggled down to a crawl, as they didn't score the rest of the game. Last 30 seconds with game at 65-62, sophomore Dara Oluyinka crashed the glass for two big offensive rebounds, missed the first one, then gathered another one and put it in to cut lead to 65-64 with about 20 seconds left. Maine East brought the ball in, got it to half court and called a timeout with 15.4 seconds left. Sophomore Jayden Dozie, who had had a fabulous game to that point took the ball out. Maine East was having problems getting someone open, Dozie tried to throw pass around a defender, it went right to junior Baker Blevins, who drove it to the rim and scored with 11 seconds left. Maine East quickly got it down the court and sophomore Albert Cooper attempted a three that was an airball, but went out of bounds off Maine West player. Maine East calls timeout to set up inbounds play underneath with 4.5 seconds left. Maine East gets the ball to senior Brandon Schreiber who drove baseline for a runner which was an airball, and the celeration begins with the student section of Maine West going nuts. They get revenge in an ambush and evened the season series.

Maine West (Des Plaines) goes to 12-14, 3-6 in Central Suburban North Conference, Maine East (Park Ridge) drops to 18-8, 5-4 in Central Suburban North Conference.
