KANELAND, ILLINOIS: Marmion Academy was the higher seed but playing Kaneland on their home court in IHSA Class 3A Regional Final. First game Marmion won by three but Jabe Haith was out with an ankle injury. It was much easier this time. It was a great crowd as both student sections were very loud. I was told this is the first 20 win season for the Cadets since the 1970's too. Here we go:
Marmion Academy (Aurora) 87 Kaneland 61: Lots of weight on the shoulders of this team. They was under 500 in the Catholic League White but had a tough schedule this season. It definitely prepared them for this moment. I'm sure it's been on this senior laden teams mind for a long time. Schedule included Catholic league heavyweights like St Rita, Brother Rice, Depaul College Prep, St Ignatius College Prep, and Mount Carmel to name a few. They beat Mount Carmel and lost some games because of Haith's missed time. Everybody is back and healthy and ready to make more history for the Cadets. Game was competitive for a half as Marmion led 20-19 after the first quarter. The second quarter was in single digits for most of it until the end of the half. The game turned on a half court bank shot by Collin Wainscott (6'2" senior guard) to give Marmion a 39-31 halftime lead. Then they went on a 15-4 run to start the third quarter to put this game away as the lead was 54-35 with half the third quarter left. Jabe Haith (6'3" senior guard) hit a three point shot at the third quarter buzzer to stake Marmion to a 62-43 lead at end of the third quarter and cruised from there. Marmion Academy ups it's record to 21-11, and advances to Burlington Central (Hampshire) Sectional Semifinals on Tuesday against South (Crystal Lake), Kaneland ends season with a outstanding 26-6 record.
COLLIN WAINSCOTT WAS ON FIRE FROM THREE AND SHOT A LOT OF FREE THROWS IN SECOND HALF: Wainscott hit his first five threes of the game ending up with 5 for 7 for the game. He shot 14 free throws in the fourth quarter alone and ended up 16 for 18 from the line. He's a very intelligent player who has a gift for drawing fouls on opponents. He had 35 points 6 rebounds 2 assists and 1 block.
JABE HAITH IS A STAT SHEET STUFFER: He had 23 points (3 for 5 from three) 10 rebounds (double/double) 2 assists 1 steal and 1 block. He was 7 for 13 from the field overall.
TREVON ROOTS IS NOT SO BAD HIMSELF STUFFING STAT SHEETS: 6'7" senior forward had 15 points 7 rebounds team high 5 assists 1 steal and 4 blocks. Very good at rim protecting as he altered a few other shots. Showed he can step out and hit the three and has great vision as a passer.
GEVON GRANT DID HIS BEST FOR HIS TEAM: Kaneland 6'0" senior guard ended his career with 13 points 6 rebounds 1 assist, 1 steal and 1 block. Shot his quick burst to the basket in the first half to keep his team in the game.
TROYER CARLSON TRIED TO KEEP HIS TEAM IN IT: Kaneland 6'3" junior guard had 16 points 3 rebounds 2 assists and 2 steals.
Congrats to Marmion Academy (Aurora) for making history and blessings on the Road To Champaign.
