Vernon Hills was trying to take the lead in the Central Suburban North, but was handicapped by senior big man Daniel Obhiambo being out with ankle injury. It showed on the glass.
Niles North (Skokie) 64 Vernon Hills 47:
Story was rebounding early as Niles North climbed the offensive glass collecting 7 in the first half. Senior forward Tom Opio (6'2") (#44) had 4 in the start. Senior forward Mustaf Rexhepi (6'4") had the other 3. It was also the on the ball defense of Niles North which was physical and stifling. They made it hard for Vernon Hills to get to their scoring spots on the court. Vikings guards were getting steals and making Vernon Hills run down the shot clock to take desperation shots at the end of the clock. As for Niles North's offense, senior point guard Rayne Punzal was getting into the lane at will and either scoring, or dropping passes off the three point shooters. He had 7 assists for the game. Junior guard Collin Tobin (6'3") (#5) was aggressive scoring in the mid range, on cuts to the rim, and posting up on the block. His three was not falling tonight (0/4), but got off 13 shots in the first half. Didn't need to shoot as much in the second half. Niles North led 19-11, 40-20 at recess, and 54-29 after three and cruised from there. Vernon Hills top scorer senior Brady Larsen fouled out with 3:29 to go in the third ruining any chances of a Vernon Hills comeback. Niles North (Skokie) ups it's record to 12-4, 4-0 in Central Suburban North, while Vernon Hills drops to 11-5, 3-1 in conference. Return go is February 6th at Vernon Hills. Obhiambo should be back in a couple of weeks.
