My first open gym stop this fall was Evanston Township tonight. After a great 7 year run including three Supersectional appearances, two State Finals appearances, a third place and runner-up finishes in consecutive years(2018, 2019), looks like a rebuild for the Wildkits. Lots of success with the shortest teams in that stretch, could take a step back this Fall. 2019 team was briefly ranked in the Fab 50 nationally, had to be the smallest team in those rankings. These were the standouts tonight:
Jamon Brooks, 6'2" guard, Class of 2022- Mid range king, was hitting it at a high rate tonight. Mixed in an attacking game driving to the basket and finishing. Tough defense on the ball resulted in multiple steals. He was a little out of control at times on attacks to the rim, but had a nice showing for the most part.
Rashawn Bost, 6'1" point guard, Class of 2022- Hit his first five shots, two of them from three point range, mixed in drives to the basket with standstill three point shots. Was hard to keep out of the paint, knowing when to attack and when to bring it back out. Played in control all night with his cerebral game from the point guard position.
Prince Adams, 6'5" forward, Class of 2023- Was a rebounding machine on the defensive end of the court. Attacked the basket relentlessly driving right and scoring at the rim. Hit a couple of three pointers off the dribble. Had a lot of turnovers handling the ball in the front court. Hit a couple of passes into shooting pockets of potential three point shooters. Will have to control the glass on both ends of the court.
David Gieser, 6'3" combo guard, Class of 2022- Fenwick(Oak Park) transfer was hitting the three point shot off catch and shoot, as well as off the dribble. Played some point guard tonight and was solid, making good passes and not turning the ball over. Look for a major contribution from him this season.
Avery Allen, 6'4" forward, Class of 2022- Young colt was slashing and dashing to the basket and finished most of the drives. Classic wing player blocked a couple of shots on the defensive end, drove coast to coast for baskets at the rim. Raw talent at this point but could work his way into the rotation. Has not had a lot of varsity experience.
Javen Barnett, 6'0 guard, Class of 2023- Hoffman Estates transfer stood out with his hustle on both ends of the court. Had a blocked shot from hustling from mid court to catch the offensive player, erasing a sure layup. Relentless motor and constantly in motion on the offensive end.
Aiden Maher, 5'10" point guard, Class of 2022- Ran the show as the lead guard. You cannot go under screens with him as he'll make you pay with a dagger three pointer. Penetrated into the paint and found shooters in the corners for threes.
CONCLUSION: Young inexperienced team(of course losing three 4 year varsity performers), work in progress. Will be a challenge to win the Central Suburban South for the 8th straight year. Will someone step up to be a leader for this team? Time will tell.
