Here we go the 60th annual Proviso West Holiday Tournament. This was by far the best one for years until Joe Spagnola went to run the Hinsdale Central tournament. This one could be on it's way back with Cyrus McGinnis involved in it. This looks like a Chicago Public League party with a couple of teams that have played national schedules so far playing in it.
FAVORITE: Though they have 4 losses none to instate teams I'm installing #2 Whitney Young(Chicago) as the favorite. They are a slight favorite and will need the junior backcourt of Dalen Davis, and Marcus Pigrim to play at a high level on both ends of the court. Senior wings Miami commit Andre Casey Jr and Northern Illinois commit Xavier Amos have been playing at a high level. If they are not too beat up by the national schedule, they have a great chance to win here.
SECOND FAVORITE: Same with #5 Kenwood Academy(Chicago) they have played a national schedule but not quite as tough as Whitney Young. Senior Nevada commit Trey Pettigrew has had a great start to his senior senior as he's has multiple double digit games with points and assists. Juniors Darrin "Dai Dai" Ames and Davius Loury have played like national level prospects. These two teams could be co-favorite and they could meet three times this season.
DARK HORSE: Proviso East(Maywood) has quietly gone undefeated with the Johnson brothers( senior Javon, junior Jaloni) doing their thing from the wing spots. Ranked 18th this perennial powerhouse looks like they want to be back in the mix in the Chicago Area. If they can get some consistent play from their interior players, they could give Whitney Young a run in the semifinals. Coach Donnie Boyce will have this team ready as this tournament is in their district.
SLEEPER: Lincoln Park(Chicago) plays five guards and loves to pressure and play fast. Senior backcourt of Chris Hammonds Jr and Chikere Nwosu. Hammonds is a three point sniper, and Nwosu is a slasher/finisher at the rim. Have a good chance to get to the Semifinals and play Kenwood Academy(Chicago) with Lincoln Park sophomore transfer Jaden Smith. That story has been contentious between the schools and would be a big thing to talk about if it materializes. All their guards will have to rebound to get that chance at the Broncos.
