Review of 2nd Annual Steve Pappas Shootout!!!!

Writer's picture: Big TimBig Tim

The second annual Steve Pappas Shootout at DePaul Prep was well done from the media spread(Lou Malnati's pizza, salad, and pasta, to the tight games in 4 of the 5. Great job by Athletic Director Pat Mahoney, and Head Coach Tom Kleinschmidt.

#7 Homewood Flossmoor 73 St Laurence(Burbank) 71: I only saw the fourth quarter of this one(Kentucky vs playing Alabama), but Homewood Flossmoor had a double digit lead most of the fourth quarter, till St Laurence closed it out with a basket at the buzzer. Homewood Flossmoor ups their record to 13-1, while St Laurence drops to 10-8.

#10 Loyola(Wilmette) 40 St Viator(Arlington Heights) 39 Overtime: Kinda a sleeper game which is usual for the style of play Loyola and in some ways St Viator plays. Sun Times Michael O'Brien said I was asleep which was false, I close my eyes during the timeouts down the stretch. There was only three baskets scored between the teams in the second quarter. St Viator led 18-17 at halftime. St Viator had a shot to win it in regulation but missed a potential game winning tip in. Senior forward Bennett Kwiecinski was more aggressive offensively in the second half which kept Loyola afloat, while senior star wing Connor Kochera of St Viator was consistent in the scoring column throughout the game. Senior guard Mark Enghauser hit two free throws with 6.3 seconds left in overtime, than Kochera hit a bank three point shot just after the buzzer and Loyola survived after scoring 4 points in overtime. Bennett Kwiecinski led Loyola with 15 points followed by Enghauser's 12. Kochera led St Viator with 20 points. Loyola ups it's record to 17-1 and has not lost to an Illinois team, while St Viator drops to 11-6.

#9 Fenwick(Oak Park) 72 St Patrick(Chicago) 66. Overtime: St Patrick played well in this game, they just could not slow down junior Bryce Hopkins, a Louisville commit, and sophomore point guard Trey Pettigrew. Hopkins had 27 points and 16 rebounds while Pettigrew had 7 three pointers and a game leading 28 points. Senior guard Dominic Galati hit a game typing three in regulation with 7 seconds left. Fenwick pushed the ball right back at St Patrick, and it appeared Pettigrew was fouled right before the buzzer. The officials huddled and ruled it was after the buzzer hence overtime. In a lively overtime Fenwick scored 13 points in that period to put the game away. Fenwick was up 3 in overtime and St Patrick was pushing the ball down the floor for the game typing three. They tried a cross court pass but Hopkins stole the ball with 20 seconds left. St Patrick had to foul which contributed to the final margin. The Shamrocks received a strong performance from junior guard Nicholas Galati who had 26 points while his brother Dominic had 8 assists and 4 steals. Sophomore guard Timaris Brown had 18 points and 8 rebounds. Fenwick ups it's record to 13-4 while St Patrick drops to 12-5.

#13 Marian Catholic(Chicago Heights) 71 #15 Morgan Park(Chicago) 67. To most this was an upset especially after Marian Catholic was taken apart by Waubonsie Valley(Aurora) who will enter my rankings this week. The shootout at the OK Corral between senior guards and Big Ten commits Ahron Ulis(Iowa) of Marian Catholic and Adam Miller(Illinois) of Morgan Park was sensational. It was back and forth between those two for awhile with big play after big play. The play of the game though was turned in by senior forward Elijah Jones(Western Ilinois) of Marian Catholic, who blocked a driving lay up by Miller with his team down 1 in the last minute of the game. Ulis ended up with 34 points in a variety of ways. He scored on drives to the basket, pull up mid range floaters, three pointers and everything in between. Miller was magnificent in his own right with 27 points, but missed some shots down the stretch. Senior guard Joe Green was very good for Marian Catholic with 21 points. When Ulis and Green are on the Spartans are tough to deal with. Senior forward Yemi Elutilo had 11 points for the Spartans. Senior guard Marcus Watson Jr(Wake Forest) had 9 points and 9 assists, junior wing Brandon Weston added 13 for Morgan Park. Marian Catholic ups it's record to 13-4 while Morgan Park drops to 9-6.

#11 DePaul Prep(Chicago) 55 Deerfield 24. This game was over at the end of the first quarter as the host Rams led 14-5 and upped the lead to 34-8 at halftime. Junior point guard Tyler Johnson scored 15 of his 17 points in the first half. The Big man battle between DePaul Prep junior Brian Matthews(6'10") vs Deerfield senior Brandon Lieb(6'11") was won by Matthews and it wasn't close. Matthews had 13 points and 7 rebounds, while Loeb had 5 points and 3 rebounds. This battle made the game somewhat interesting. Senior Lance Moseley gave the Rams three double figure scorers with 11 points. DePaul Prep shut down Deerfield's star junior guard Walt Mattingly as he had 2 points 4 rebounds and 2 assists. Lieb tied for game high honors of 5 points with senior forward Joey Shapiro and sophomore guard Luke Woodson. DePaul Prep ups it's record to 15-2 while Deerfield drops to 7-6.
