This six game set was very good and well run by my friend Larry Butler. Great match ups and two overtime games. Three Chicago Public League White Division teams showed they can really play and play well as two of them beat Chicago Public League Red Super Conference Teams. Here we go:
South Shore(Chicago) 61 Walter Payton 52: First white vs red division match up and the white division team won. Sophomore point guard Nathaniel Lee put on a scoring show in this game hitting 5 threes for his 25 points for South Shore. This game was close till the third quarter when South Shore outscored Walter Payton 25-9 to take a 48-32 lead and cruise from there. Lee was supported by sophomore wing Christopher McDonald and senior forward Andre Stewart with 10 points each. Stewart also had 8 rebounds and 3 blocks. Walter Payton was led by senior Jabari Chiphe with 23 points followed by junior wing Eamon Glasscott with 10 points. Chiphe also had 4 blocks. South Shore ups it's record to 12-5 while Walter Payton dropped to 4-14.
Hammond(IN) 84 Peoria 59: This was the only blowout of the day but was still entertaining. Why? This was my first look at 6'7" junior forward Darrell Reed. He has one scholarship offer to Illinois Chicago but I anticipate a lot more. He's a jumping jack who had 3 dunks and missed another one that he almost destroyed the defender. This game was over at halftime as Hammond had a 42-23 lead. Reed got into some foul trouble in the third quarter but made no difference as they had a 22 point lead entering the fourth quarter. Reed had 19 points followed by senior guard Tim Wilder 18 points, junior guard Harold Woods 14 points, and senior forward Jamar Styles 11 points and 8 rebounds. Peoria was led by junior Dionsyious Hogan 21 points and 6 rebounds. He was the only Peoria player in double figures. Hammond ups it's record to 10-2, while Peoria dropped to 10-8.
Phillips(Chicago) 72 Hyde Park(Chicago) 68 Overtime: The second white vs red division showdown that the white team won. This game was close all game long. Phillips was winning 58-57 and had the ball with 50.1 seconds left when the Phillips coach picked up a technical foul. Hyde Park split the technical free throws to make it 58 all and it stayed that way till the end of regulation. The overtime was filled with missed free throws by the host Hyde Park. They missed a total of 5 in the overtime period, while Phillips hit more than enough free throws to get this big win. Phillips has not lost to a red division team this season, nor lost a game to to Chicago team. Phillips was led by freshman guard Jaheim Savage with 27 points and 10 rebounds followed by senior guards Keyon Joiner and Davion Jordan with 14 apiece. Joiner also had 10 rebounds. Hyde Park's numbers did not match the roster in the program so no stats here. Phillips ups it's record to 13-3 while Hyde Park drops to 10-8.
Crane(Chicago) 62 Plainfield Central 55: Crane is another White division team who impressed. They hit their first 9 threes which were hit by five different players. They had leads of 28-7 and 41-13 lead which led to a 45-28 lead at halftime. They shot 11 for 13 from three in the first half. Just unconscious!!!!!! Game over right? Not quite as Plainfield Central slowly crwaled their way back making a defensive adjustment to go over screens so the Crane shooters could not get open. Crane went 1 for 5 from three in the second half, and Plainfield Central cut the lead to 57-54 with 1:30 left. Crane hit enough free throws to secure the win. Crane tried to work the offense through senior guard Robert Hobbs in the paint for the second half. Hobbs went for 18 points and 10 rebounds. He was supported by junior guard Marcus Gaston 16 points, followed by foward Jimarius Sneed's 11 points. Plainfield Central was led by senior guard Tavari Johnson with 16 points 7 rebounds and 4 steals. He was supported by senior guard Brandon Shoemaker's 12 points and 5 assists. Crane ups it's record to 17-3 while Plainfield Central drops to 11-8.
Oak Park River Forest 73 Lincoln Way East(Frankfort) 69: Another entertaining game that was close throughout the game. A lot of lead changes and big time plays by both teams. Oak Park led 38-33 at halftime, then Lincoln Way East outscored Oak Park 20-14 in the third to take a one point lead into the fourth quarter. Oak Park forcing a 5 second call up 67-63 with 52.8 seconds left sealed the game. Oak Park was led by junior wing Isaiah Barnes with 27 points followed by junior guard Josh Smith with 22 points. Lincoln Way East was led by Jhei-R Jones with 22 points 5 rebounds 6 assists 3 steals followed by senior center Sean McLaughlin 8 points and 13 rebounds. Oak Park River Forest ups it's record to 10-6 while Lincoln Way East drops to 12-4.
#14 Lincoln Park(Chicago) 56 #16 West(Joliet) 55 Overtime: They saved the best for last as this was the game of the day. Great guard match up as both teams have very talented back courts. The difference in this game was senior forward Romelle Howard of Lincoln Park. He made things tough for Joliet West in the paint all night. He had 15 points 15 rebounds and 6 blocked shots. He made things tough for Toledo commit senior guard Jamere Hill of Joliet West getting off his mid range shots especially in the first half. Hill came alive in the second half and overtime with 20 of his 22 points along with 6 rebounds 4 assists 4 steals and 2 blocks. Joliet West was down 48-45 with 6.7 seconds left, Hill gets the inbounds pass, takes two dribbles to the top of the key, delivered a one hand pass to Tre'vonta Hall who calmly took one dribble and made a three at the buzzer. The overtime period Lincoln Park took over and led by one with 3.7 seconds left. Lincoln Park missed a one and one, junior forward Trent Howland got the rebound, passed it to Hill who missed a shot at the buzzer and Lincoln Park survived. Lincoln Park was led by Ismail Habib with 17 points followed by Howard's 15, and junior guard Julio Montes 11. Hill was the only player in double figures for Joliet West. Lincoln Park ups it's record to 17-3 while Joliet West drops to 17-3.
