Sleeper Prospect of The Week Volume 3: Introducing Terrence "Tre" Jones!!!!!!!!

Writer's picture: Big TimBig Tim

Terrence Jones, 6'2" point guard, Longwood High School, Chicago, Illinois.

The top sleeper prospect in the Chicago Public League. How can a young man who is Top 3 in scoring in the Chicago Public League Red South/Central in scoring go unnoticed? This is probably the best traditional high school basketball league in America. Well this is the breakdown of his season per Head Coach Keyon Smothers:

6’1 SR PG Terrence Jones

Current Record: 13-8 and 3-6

-1st Team All-Tournament @ the Plano Christmas Tournament.

-Top 3 Scorer In the Red-South Conference.

21-22 Season Stats:

PPG: 19.8

RPG 8.6

APG 3.7

SPG 2.2

Terrence Jones (Tre) has been having a breakout Senior season playing his first year on varsity due to our season being canceled last year. Terrence is leading our Longwood Panthers this 2021-22 season in Points, Assists, and Rebounds. Tre helped the Panthers complete in the toughest conference in the state of IL (Red-South) on top of playing a tough non conference schedule. Terrence has had big games vs some of the top teams in the state. Terrence went from unranked to 1 of the Top players in the CPL. Currently ranked top 10 in his class by (PrepHoops).

Could not have wrote it better myself but here's my breakdown:

OFFENSE: Lefty who can score at all three levels of the court. Has a nice smooth stroke from three point range, off the catch, or off the dribble. Has a nasty two dribble pull-up from mid range, and is a smooth finisher at the rim. He can hammer on you, but he'd rather go around you like a smooth dancer on the court. Fluid in his movements on drives to the basket, nice step around Euro step in the lane to get away from the defender. Rebounds well for his position, as he hits the defensive boards hard. Above average athlete who gets up high gathering rebounds. Good passer with vision to find teammates in the shooting pocket, on the fast break hitting a teammate in stride so they can finish at the rim. Good ball handler who rarely commits turnovers, plays under control on the court. Seamlessly switches from either guard position. Rarely gets too high or too low on the court. Just goes about his business trying to help his team win.

DEFENSE: Can guard all the perimeter positions at the next level, and will do all five positions on the high school level. Good at playing the passing lanes in the press, quick hands guarding man on the ball. Stays in front of his man on the perimeter, fights for position in the post when guarding a man taller and bigger than him. Communicates with his teammates well, whether it's man to man or zone defense. Will have to get stronger to hold his position better at the next level, but a college weight room will help in this area. Will block the occasional shot off help side defense. Fluid in his movements on defense as well, seems to float around the court, looking for opportunities to pick your pocket. Boxes out well to collect defensive rebounds.

CONCLUSION: He could play Low NCAA division one division two level. Would be a great asset to any team at this levels. He hasn't had much chance to run a team as a point guard, but I've seen him do it very well. Just not sure the colleges have seen it. Most underrated player in the Chicago Public League Red Division. College coaches are missing the boat with this young man. I think a lot of it is because he only was able to play one varsity season because of Covid19. Young man is a high academic achiever with a 3.4 grade point average. Interest from some schools but no offers. Where are you at college coaches? No highlights to find but one and it's a game he plays against another sleeper Davontae Hall of Hyde Park Academy(Chicago). He's #15 in blue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wYxf-efpdo.
