I'll start with the biggest game in the Chicago Area since 2008 when Oak Hill Academy came calling to play Simeon Career Academy and left with a loss. Well Sierra Canyon almost did but beat previously undefeated #1 in Chicago Area Glenbard West at the Chipotle Champions Classic 67-64 on a last second three. I just saw the Illinois Class 4A State Champ. I know I know it just turned February. The only way the Hilltoppers express can be stopped is by injury. They showed championship heart tonight with that comeback to tie the game. They could never get the lead though as Sierra Canyon out of California showed their own heart in not giving in. I'm not giving excuses for Glenbard West's uncharacteristically poor free throw shooting tonight. They played a game last night, Sierra Canyon did not. I think that was the difference, and also the had a great game plan, and the athletes to execute it. Used their deep bench to tire out Glenbard West. Bronny James seemed to not be able to miss from three as he was 6 of 10 with 18 points. Chicagoan Amari Bailey is a pro folks. He had 19 points on some legit NBA type moves. Glenbard West had 5 players in double figures but shot 11 for 20 from the free throw line. Also Huff fell hard on his hip and was favoring it from the second quarter on. They play Simeon on February 18th. I don't see them losing that game as I think this game helped them. The courage of Coach Opoka to even schedule this game, which was not originally on the schedule is admirable. They could have stayed with their original schedule, went undefeated, and not challenge themselves. They put it out on the line and showed the nation those young men from Glen Ellyn are pretty good and can play with anyone.
No I did not forget about the impressive performance of Glenbrook South in the first game tonight. They obliterated a tired Curie team 72-48 who was playing their third game in three days. They are in the middle of the Chicago Public League Playoffs. I still thought the Titans would win but not by this margin. Nick Martinelli(28 points) and Cooper Noard were impressive as usual. The supporting cast of Gavin Marr, Rodell Davis Jr and Spencer Brown amongst others made a lot of contributions. They beat Rolling Meadows on Tuesday and they will be the #1 seed in their own sectional.
Donda Homecoming: Kenwood Academy had as much as a 29 point lead on Hillcrest before winning by 17. I was told they looked impressive but I still stick to my statement from earlier in this write-up. They looked good though playing their third game in three days as they are in the middle of the Chicago Public League Playoffs. Darius Robinson 25 points on 7 threes.
Simeon Career Academy lost to Coronado from Henderson, Nevada 64-60. It's been a bad three weeks for Chicago Public League Red Division but Simeon was playing their third game in three days as they are in the middle of the Chicago Public League Playoffs.
Whitney Young in their third game in three days in middle of Chicago Public league Playoffs lost to Vashon(St Louis, MO) tonight. Not a great day for top teams vs out of state opponents.
St Rita lost to Christian Brothers College(St Louis,MO).
