Jereme Richmond was in the house. Famous for hitting the half court shot 16 years ago in a sectional final vs Warren. Other Lake County basketball dignitaries were in the house aka Ceola Clark, Aaron Simpson amongst others. Best basketball atmosphere I've been in in a few years. Sold out gym. Smell of popcorn and anticipation to see who the best team in Lake County is. The basketball was sloppy but then the level of play jumped up as the game got late. Here we go:
Warren (Gurnee) 70 Waukegan 60 2 Overtimes:
Waukegan beat Warren the first two times they played each other this season. The rivalry was very heated in the summer league game and that set the tone for the season. .
Here were some top performances:
Warren Township (Gurnee):
Senior Zach Ashburn, Warren Township: 6'8" center has come on since the start of the season. Big time baseball pitcher , his game has gotten better and better as the season has gone in the on. He was the start last night of this game. His rebounding and rim protecting were huge. He had 23 points 21 rebounds (20/20 double/double) 4 blocks and 1 steal.
Sophomore Jaxson Davis, Warren Township: 6'1" sophomore sensation has strugggled shooting in the first two regular season games including 4 for 21 in the last game. He was on this game though, hitting a running 30 foot three point shot at second quarter buzzer. It was close to the same shot that Jereme Richmond hit 16 years ago to send Waukegan to the Supersectional. Davis had 22 points 6 rebounds 5 assists and 1 steal. He had two opportunities to win the game at the buzzer in regulation and first overtime but missed. Still worked out for his team.
Senior Javerion Banks, Warren Township: Missed a month with injuries that required surgery. He's getting his sea legs back and it showed last night. His movement look smooth on drives to the basket and pull up jumpers. He had thegame clinching dunk and one in the second overtime. Scored 15 points and 8 rebounds off the bench. Since he's been back from injury, Warren is bringing him off the bench.
Waukegan:
Junior Carter Newsome, Waukegan: 5'10"point guard hit some clutch shots last night and made Davis work to get to his spots. Two key threes in the fourth quarter gave Waukegan leads each time. He scored 15 points and 1 steal.
Junior Simereon Carter, Waukegan: 6'5" wing made some nice plays scoring three, on drives to the rim and getting to the line. He scored 15 points 2 steals and 2 blocks.
Junior Adrian Serrano, Waukegan: 6'1" combo guard was huge off the bench with energy and hit a timely three point shot in the third quarter in the 14-0 run to get them back into the game.
Key points in the game:
Waukegan's 14-0 run in the third quarter to turn a 31-24 halftime deficit to a 43-41 lead at end of the third quarter. Warren had a 39-27 lead in the middle of the quarter.
Waukegan coach Ron Ashlaw getting a technical foul in the second overtime with Warren leading by 3 with 1:04 left. He was upset because he thought senior Xavi Granville was fouled driving to the basket before picking up an offensive foul. That was Granville's fifth foul which fouled him out. Davis hit the two free throws that put Warren up 5. Game over. Granville was in foul trouble the entire game. He was the X factor in the first two matchups. Scored 5 points on free throws. Did not score from the field. Did have 4 rebounds and 4 blocks.
Warren Towsnhip (Gurnee) advances to the DeKalb (Northern Illinois) Class 4A Supersectional vs Rolling Meadows with a 25-10 record.
Waukegan ends seaosn with a share of North Suburban Title and a 24-8 record.
