As usual a big time game at the Dog Pound in Waukegan. Waukegan won at Warren by 10 a month ago. This time they protected their home turf and got a psychological advantage if they meet again in Class 4A State Playoffs likely in the same building. Here we go:
Waukegan 68 #16 Warren Township (Gurnee) 65:
I told the Waukegan players they will be back in the rankings next week. I probably should have kept them in there as they have only 2 losses with their full lineup. Junior Simereon Carter was out a few weeks with an injury. Waukegan did a good job contesting Jaxson Davis's drives to the basket once he got by his defender. The length of Waukegan bothered his shots at the rim.
First quarter:
They played on even terms as senior big man Zach Ashburn of Warren Township got off to a good start on offesne scoring inside. He had 9 first quarter points and 3 for 3 from the free throw line. Meanwhile Waukegan had senior Xavi Granville matching Ashburn going off for 11 first quarter points. Star sophomore Jaxson Davis of Warren struggled scoring all night. He was 0 for 5 shooting in the quarter. Quarter ended tied at 14.
Second quarter:
The scoring picked up for both teams. Warren senior Owen Squires came off the bench and was on fire. Hit 4 for 4 from three in the quarter for all 12 of his points. Davis scored 5 points in the quarter on 3 for 6 shooting. Granville kept scoring as he had 9 points in the quarter on 3 of 5 shooting and 3 for 3 from free throw line before going out with 3 fouls. Carter scored half his points in the quarter with 4 of his 8 points. Warren outscored Waukegan 24-21 in the quarter to take a 38-35 lead into the break.
Third quarter:
Waukegan took over the game in this quarter. It didn't help that Jaxson Davis picked up his fourth foul with 4:30 left in the quarter. He stayed in the game and did not come out as he did not commit another foul in the game. He still had to play a little more cautious than usual. It was team scoring for Waukegan in the quarter. Juniors Jaali "Rico" Love scored 6, Adrian Serrano 4, Carter Newsome 4. Outscored Warren 21-12 in the quarter to take a 56-50 lead into the fourth quarter.
Fourth quarter:
Waukegan controlled proceedings most of the quarter as they held a 6-9 point lead most of the quarter. Led 66-59 with 1:32 left, then Warren proceeded a comeback. They had a couple of steals and baskets to get it to 66-63. Warren coaches thought the score was wrong and it should have been 66-64. Senior Javerion Banks scored a basket, and got fouled. That made it 66-63, he missed a free throw, ball bounced around and he got another rebound and scored to make it 66-65. Warren had fouls to give and they gave a couple to put Waukegan's Carter Newsome (#0) at the free throw line with 5.1 seconds left. Newsome hit both. Davis dribbled up the court, was fouled by Newsome as Waukegan had a foul to give. Timeout Warren. They drew up a play and got it to Davis who shot a 21 foot three point shot that was short, Waukegan got the rebound, the buzzer sounded, and they had their second huge win over their rivals.
I see a third meeting coming in the state playoffs, likely in the Dog Pound. Waukegan has a physchological advantage. I would love to see it one more time this season.
Waukegan ups it's record to 17-5, 7-1 in North Suburban Conference.
Warren Township (Gurnee) 15-7, 4-4 in North Suburban Conference. Likely won't win the conference this season.
